What is the vulva?

Many people use the word vagina to refer to their female genitalia, however, the vagina is actually protected by the vulva! Vulva refers to the external part of the female genitalia which protects the vagina, urinary opening and vestibule.

To be more specific, the outer and inner folds of the vulva are called the labia majora and labia minora. The vestibule is the area that surrounds the opening of the vagina, and the opening of the urethra (urinary canal). The perineum is the area extending from beneath the vulva to the anus.

How do you care for your vulva?

There are some basic care steps you can take to help ensure vulvar wellness. Since many infections are introduced into the vagina from the vulva, these tips may also keep your vagina healthy!

The goal of vulvar care is to keep the vulva dry and free from irritants.

Tips for vulvar care
  • The vagina cleanses itself naturally in the form of normal, vaginal discharge. Avoid using douches unless prescribed by your physician. These products can upset the natural balance of organisms.
  • Wear 100 percent cotton underwear, preferably white.
  • Avoid wearing nylon, acetate, or other manmade fibers if you have delicate skin or are prone to vulvar irritation.
  • Avoid wearing nylon pantyhose or shapewear. They trap heat and moisture, providing an ideal breeding environment for organisms.
  • Avoid wearing thongs.
  • Rinse underclothes carefully after washing or double-rinse.
  • Avoid using too much laundry detergent.
  • Use a detergent that is dermatologist approved or free of fragrances and other irritating ingredients.
  • Avoid using fabric softeners including dryer sheets when laundering your undergarments.
  • Wash new underclothes before wearing.
  • Use soft, unscented toilet tissue (white only).
  • Try to use tampons as much as possible instead of sanitary napkins. Do not use deodorant/scented tampons or sanitary napkins.
  • Don’t scratch if itching occurs.
  • Avoid feminine hygiene products that can irritate the vulva: feminine spray or deodorants, scented oils, bubble baths, bath oils, creams, soaps, talc or powder.
  • Keep the vulva clean and dry.
  • Use warm water to wash the vulva. Pat dry with a clean towel.
  • Apply a specifically formulated feminine skincare product such as EpiGyn to nourish, soothe and comfort.
